Wealth Management Reading
Patronus Partners is a leading boutique wealth management firm with offices in Reading and London. Spear's Magazine 'Top 10 Wealth Managers in the UK’ (James Barton).
A Leading wealth management company in reading
Patronus was founded in 2015 on the realisation that large wealth management companies are often sub-optimal for clients.
Patronus is an increasingly rare example of a genuinely independent, unconflicted, staff owned wealth management firm in Reading.
Our clients benefit from our team’s experience working for large banks, hedge funds and investment firms but prefer a more intimate, friendly and client focused boutique wealth management firm.
We prefer to stay small, independent and optimal for a limited number of clients.
What we do
-
We structure our client’s investment portfolios as tax efficiently as possible.
We monitor changes in government legislation to make sure that our clients remain as tax efficient as possible and give ongoing advice on this.
We do not charge initial fees for financial advice.
-
A changing investment environment requires adaptation, innovation, and focus. As a local wealth management firm in Reading, we are able to offer a flexible investment style, in order to capitalise on the ever changing macroeconomic environment.
We can actively position portfolios, whatever the evolving investment landscape, and, as we are an independent wealth management firm in Reading, we are entirely free to invest in an unconflicted way, with no “in-house” products. You can read some of our latest research here.
-
Some of our clients also use our execution only trading and custody service, enabling them to have all of their investments under one roof.
Our traders work on behalf of various, hedge funds and family offices. Our private clients are able to benefit from institutional quality trading, settlement and custody.
“We are all escapees from large firms and feel that clients no longer want the bland industry stereotype but prefer a smaller firm whose interests are aligned with theirs. The industry is ever- homogenising and unfortunately seems to focus more on shareholders than on clients".
— James Barton, Spear’s magazine.
The Unspoken Truth…
is that large pension advice firms are often sub-optimal for their clients.
As an independent pension advisor we are not constrained by being tied to our own in-house funds, looking after too many clients and nor are we under relentless shareholder pressure for revenue growth – all of which are detrimental to clients.
Our clients receive truly independent advice about their pensions in an unbiased way.
We only ever offer what we believe to be the best in class in order to deliver the best outcome for our clients.
"Patronus’ from the original Latin, is a person who stood as a protector to another, who was called his ‘client’. It struck a chord with us.”
— Paul Kavanagh CEO
Why invest with a wealth management firm in Reading?
Independence
We are employee owned with no shareholder pressure to deliver ever increasing revenue targets, which are often to the detriment of the client.
Freedom
We are not constrained or conflicted by the issues many pension advice firms face such as being tied to their own ’in-house’ funds and static portfolios. We are free to invest in what we believe will give the best outcome.
Performance
Whilst we cannot guarantee that past performance will be repeated, since inception, our portfolios have performed better than the industry benchmark.
Experience
Most members of our team have over 20 years’ experience looking after the investments for private clients and working in senior positions of larger firms.
Close Relationships
We deliberately have fewer clients so that they can benefit from an intimate relationship with the firm and have direct access to our whole team in Berkshire and London.
Fees
We do not charge initial fees for our advice just a clear annual fee, only payable once you start to invest with us.

“One of the top 10 Wealth Managers in the UK. Barton is a dichotomy... An affable bonhomie, but with a sharp, disruptive, forward-thinking mind. His preference for questioning the rules, combined with his friendly nature, is why clients seek his insightful advice and why he is regarded as one of the top practitioners in the industry"

Reading isn’t just an economic centre—it’s a place where opportunity, growth, and ambition meet. Whether you're building wealth, protecting assets, or planning for the next generation, wealth management here demands clarity, foresight, and a partner who understands both local dynamics and global shifts. At Patronus Partners, we deliver wealth management services designed for Reading residents seeking substance, integrity, and personal attention.
What Wealth Management in Reading Truly Means
We believe wealth management involves more than growing assets—it’s about creating a sustainable framework that supports your life goals, values, and legacy over time. Our approach includes:
Vision-Based Planning – What do you want your wealth to achieve? Retirement comfort, educational security, philanthropic giving, or business legacy? We map that first.
Diversified Investment Design – Portfolios built to combine growth, income, and risk management across a mix of local and global markets.
Tax-Aware Strategy – Leveraging allowances, sheltering income, and structuring investments to minimise tax erosion while maintaining high standards of compliance.
Legacy & Succession Guidance – Protecting what you have, planning for what you leave behind, and ensuring your wealth transfers in a way that reflects your principles.
Responsive Review & Adaptation – Regular check-ins plus adjustments when economic, regulatory, or personal changes occur.
Reading’s Unique Features & How They Influence Wealth Management
Reading has several traits that shape how wealth is grown, preserved, and deployed. We tailor our services around these realities:
Tech & Innovation Energy – With many businesses and people tied to technology, innovation, and evolving business models, adaptability is essential. Some clients may hold business equity or other nontraditional financial exposures.
Strong Real Estate Weight – Residential and commercial property often comprise a significant part of an individual’s net worth here. Balancing property investment with liquidity and tax strategy is a recurring theme.
Commuter Proximity Considerations – Many Reading residents work in or near London. Commuting dynamics, lifestyle trade-offs, and income/tax effects often come into play in long-term financial plans.
Diverse Client Needs Across Life Stages – Families, professionals, and retirees all want different blends of growth, security, legacy, and lifestyle. Wealth management strategies must flex accordingly.
How Patronus Partners Works Differently in Reading
We provide more than advice—we build long-term partnerships. Our commitments include:
True Independence – No hidden alignment with product vendors; we choose what we believe is best for each client.
Small, Focused Client Cohorts – With fewer clients, we offer greater access, more personal interaction, and focused support.
Transparent Engagement & Clear Fees – Clarity on costs and benefits from the start. No fee surprises.
Deep Experience, Locally Applied – Experience from large firms but applied with the attentiveness and flexibility of a boutique.
FAQs
1. When should I think about wealth management, not just saving or investing?
Suppose your assets or responsibilities (property, business interests, family legacy) are growing, or you're facing tax, regulatory, or life-stage changes (e.g., becoming a parent, a change in employment). In that case, it's time to build a comprehensive framework, not just saving or buying individual investments.2. Does having property in Reading mean I need different wealth strategies?
Yes. High property exposure can bring risks (such as lack of liquidity, potential tax liabilities, and maintenance overhead). We often recommend balancing property with other asset classes and ensuring estate planning accounts for potential inheritance tax and market shifts.3. How often should plans be reviewed?
Annually at minimum, but ideally more frequently if something significant changes—new legislation, property acquisition, shifting career path. Regular monitoring keeps your strategy aligned with your life.4. Can wealth management be aligned with personal values (e.g. sustainability, ESG)?
Definitely, many Reading clients want their investments to reflect their values—whether that's environmental impact, ethical governance, community investment, or socially responsible business practices. We integrate these preferences into portfolio design.5. Will working with a Reading-based firm limit my access to global opportunities?
Not at all. A local firm with global capability ensures you can access international markets, specialist investment opportunities, and alternative assets—while benefiting from local insight and relationships.Useful Local & Industry Resources
