Wealth Management Berkshire
Patronus Partners is a leading boutique wealth management firm with offices in Berkshire and London. Spear's Magazine 'Top 10 Wealth Managers in the UK’ (James Barton).
A Leading wealth management company in Berkshire
Patronus was founded in 2015 on the realisation that large wealth management companies are often sub-optimal for clients.
Patronus is an increasingly rare example of a genuinely independent, unconflicted, staff owned wealth management firm in Berkshire.
Our clients benefit from our team’s experience working for large banks, hedge funds and investment firms but prefer a more intimate, friendly and client focused boutique wealth management firm.
We prefer to stay small, independent and optimal for a limited number of clients.
What we do
-
We structure our client’s investment portfolios as tax efficiently as possible.
We monitor changes in government legislation to make sure that our clients remain as tax efficient as possible and give ongoing advice on this.
We do not charge initial fees for financial advice.
-
A changing investment environment requires adaptation, innovation, and focus. As a boutique wealth management firm, we are able to offer a flexible investment style, in order to capitalise on the ever changing macroeconomic environment.
We can actively position portfolios, whatever the evolving investment landscape, and, as we are an independent boutique wealth management firm, we are entirely free to invest in an unconflicted way, with no “in-house” products. You can read some of our latest research here.
-
Some of our clients also use our execution only trading and custody service, enabling them to have all of their investments under one roof.
Our traders work on behalf of various, hedge funds and family offices. Our private clients are able to benefit from institutional quality trading, settlement and custody.
“We are all escapees from large firms and feel that clients no longer want the bland industry stereotype but prefer a smaller firm whose interests are aligned with theirs. The industry is ever- homogenising and unfortunately seems to focus more on shareholders than on clients".
— James Barton, Spear’s magazine.
The Unspoken Truth…
is that large pension advice firms are often sub-optimal for their clients.
As an independent pension advisor we are not constrained by being tied to our own in-house funds, looking after too many clients and nor are we under relentless shareholder pressure for revenue growth – all of which are detrimental to clients.
Our clients receive truly independent advice about their pensions in an unbiased way.
We only ever offer what we believe to be the best in class in order to deliver the best outcome for our clients.
"Patronus’ from the original Latin, is a person who stood as a protector to another, who was called his ‘client’. It struck a chord with us.”
— Paul Kavanagh CEO
Why invest with a wealth management firm in Berkshire?
Independence
We are employee owned with no shareholder pressure to deliver ever increasing revenue targets, which are often to the detriment of the client.
Freedom
We are not constrained or conflicted by the issues many pension advice firms face such as being tied to their own ’in-house’ funds and static portfolios. We are free to invest in what we believe will give the best outcome.
Performance
Whilst we cannot guarantee that past performance will be repeated, since inception, our portfolios have performed better than the industry benchmark.
Experience
Most members of our team have over 20 years’ experience looking after the investments for private clients and working in senior positions of larger firms.
Close Relationships
We deliberately have fewer clients so that they can benefit from an intimate relationship with the firm and have direct access to our whole team in Berkshire and London.
Fees
We do not charge initial fees for our advice just a clear annual fee, only payable once you start to invest with us.

“One of the top 10 Wealth Managers in the UK. Barton is a dichotomy... An affable bonhomie, but with a sharp, disruptive, forward-thinking mind. His preference for questioning the rules, combined with his friendly nature, is why clients seek his insightful advice and why he is regarded as one of the top practitioners in the industry"

Berkshire is more than just prosperity — it's a county where history, culture, and ambition intertwine. From Windsor’s royal stateliness to Reading’s entrepreneurial energy, this region demands wealth management that’s as sophisticated as it is personal. Patronus Partners helps you navigate that landscape with clarity and strategy, ensuring your wealth supports not just what you have, but what you want to become.
Rethinking Wealth Management
In Berkshire, managing wealth isn’t simply about accumulation — it's about alignment. That means aligning your values, your legacy, and your life goals with how capital is grown, protected, and passed on. It involves seeing wealth management not as one-off transactions, but as an evolving journey.
Key pillars in our approach:
Meaningful Goals First — we begin with what your future looks like, not what financial products are available.
Tailored Investment Approaches — portfolios built to match both your risk comfort and your personal story.
Legacy & Family Dynamics — ensuring wealth reflects what matters, whether that’s family, causes, or long-term generational planning.
Tax & Regulatory Insight — Berkshire has its own mix of property, commuter wealth, and business opportunity; understanding what the laws allow (and limit) is essential.
Berkshire Towns: Wealth Styles & Priorities
Each town in Berkshire carries its own flavour — both in lifestyle and in what residents often care most about. Below are places we work with a lot, and some of the financial priorities we see there:
Town
What People Tend to Value in Their Wealth Strategy
Reading
Growth and adaptability — many clients here value dynamic investment strategies, business equity, and forward-looking planning that keeps pace with this fast-growing hub.
Windsor
Stability and preservation — properties, inheritance planning, and ensuring the wealth legacy endures through generations tend to be top priorities.
Maidenhead
Balance — many clients juggle London commuting, property ownership, education costs, and still want sustainable growth without sacrificing peace of mind.
Newbury
Lifestyle & sustainability — combining rural character with modern amenities; clients often seek wealth approaches that accommodate property diversification, local investment, and long-term financial peace.
What Makes Patronus Partners Different in Berkshire
Effective wealth management in Berkshire requires more than generic advice. Here’s how our service stands apart:
Unconflicted Breadth of Choice — we are not bound to “in-house” products; you receive choices that serve your interests, not someone else’s margin.
Focused Client Load — rather than trying to scale by volume, we opt for fewer clients so we can give intentional attention, responsiveness, and refined care.
Beats-Benchmarks Mindset — while we never promise past returns, our team has a strong track record in delivering performance that aims to outpace standard industry benchmarks.
Transparent Fee Structure — we avoid hidden charges. Our fees are clear, understandable, and tied to value, not to selling something.
FAQs
1. How does owning property in places like Windsor or Maidenhead affect my wealth strategy?
Property ownership in high-value towns presents both opportunities and risks. It can boost net worth but also create tax liabilities, estate complexities, and liquidity challenges. We help clients integrate property with other investments to balance diversification and maintain flexibility.2. What financial challenges are common for commuters in Berkshire?
Commuting influences investment timing, pension planning, and even cash flow (e.g. travel costs, housing premiums). Many clients seek portfolios that perform well enough to support both their lifestyle and savings, without being overly conservative or overly risky.3. When is generational or inheritance planning particularly important here?
In Berkshire, where property values and family wealth are often substantial, inheritance planning becomes crucial for many individuals earlier on. Wills, trusts, family gifting, and philanthropic plans often play a prominent role in clients’ plans.4. How do local tax and property laws affect wealth management in the county?
Very directly. Stamp duty, inheritance tax, capital gains tax, and planning permissions can all vary depending on the town and the type of asset. Staying informed about local regulations is essential to avoid surprises and make strategies efficient.5. Can newer wealth trends (ESG, impact investing, sustainable property) be part of a Berkshire-centric wealth plan?
Absolutely. Berkshire’s mix of affluence, ecological awareness, and local community values means many clients want their investments to reflect more than just returns. We help weave ESG, impact, and sustainability into the core of wealth strategies.Useful Local and Financial Resources
